The All Blacks have firmed as favourites to retain the Rugby World Cup with the four remaining teams all from the southern hemisphere for the first time in the history of the tournament.

The Rugby World Cup semi-finals will resemble the Rugby Championship with New Zealand to play South Africa on Sunday morning (AEDT), and Australia and Argentina to clash a day later.

Frenchman Jerome Garces will be the referee for the third time in four Tests between the All Blacks and South Africa when he controls their Rugby World Cup semi-final.

Garces has been handed the whistle for the clash at Twickenham on Saturday, with compatriot Romain Poite and Ireland’s John Lacey named assistant referees. Australian George Ayoub is the television match official.

Preview :

All eyes will be on Twickenham on Saturday afternoon as New Zealand bid to prolong the defence of their Rugby World Cup crown into the final week of the tournament. Standing in their way is a South Africa side that has had their number in the past, yet have stumbled somewhat into the last four and needed a last-gasp Fourie du Preez try to see off Wales in the last eight. All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu will be a keen observer of the action in south west London, not only as a proud New Zealander but with his try-scoring records set to be broken.

Springbok winger Bryan Habana needs one try to set a new all-time World Cup high, while Julian Savea would set a new single tournament benchmark were he to cross the whitewash and add to his eight scores so far. Little significance needs adding to a World Cup semifinal, of course, but it means that the first part of this weekend’s Twickenham double header should be an enthralling affair.

South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer has resisted the urge to tinker with his side, naming an unchanged starting XV for the last four clash. The Springboks have been boosted by the return to the matchday squad of veteran lock Victor Matfield, who is in line to win his 126th Test cap. Indeed, the Northampton-bound second row could start if Lood de Jager fails a late fitness test. Matfield is one of eight players in the 23-man squad who played in the Springboks’ 37-13 win over Argentina in the 2007 World Cup semifinals.

The only change to the New Zealand side for Saturday’s semifinal has been forced upon coach Steve Hansen with Joe Moody replacing injured prop Wyatt Crockett, who was brought off during the first half of the quarterfinal stroll against France. Meanwhile, captain Richie McCaw will lead out the All Blacks for a 12th time at World Cups, setting a new record.

World Cup Results between New Zealand and South Africa :

Lost  –  15 – 12  =  Johannesburg, 1995  (final)

Lost  –  22 – 18 =  Millennium Stadium, 1999  (bronze game)

Win  –  29 – 9   =  Melbourne, 2003  (quarterfinal)

No-one cares about third vs fourth play-offs while few in New Zealand remember the 2003 quarter-final, given the All Blacks were toppled by Australia a week later in Sydney.

By far the most famous World Cup encounter between these two great teams was the 1995 decider in front of Nelson Mandela and a packed Ellis Park. In fact, this is almost certainly the most iconic rugby game of all-time, given the role it played in uniting a fractured South Africa.

The defending champion All Blacks rank as one of the world’s most impressive outfits in any sport — boasting an all-time winning percentage of 78.45. New Zealand has played 536 Tests and won a whopping 411 of them, to go with 106 losses and 19 draws, with a points differential of +7359.

South Africa — who like New Zealand have won two World Cups — have an all-time winning percentage of 65.88. The Springboks have played 450 Tests and won 286 of them, to go with 143 losses, and 21 draws, with a points differential of +3432

Overall Results :

In South Africa 47 21 25 1 878 850

Overall 90 52 35 3 1745 1412

Late Mail:

Both teams have injury issues ahead of the big clash. The All Blacks are sweating on exciting rookie winger Nehe Milner-Skudder (shoulder) and loose-head prop Wyatt Crockett (groin).

“Nehe is progressing really well,” said All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster. There’s certainly improvement there”.

“Wyatt we are not so sure about. It’s a possibility [he misses the match].

“There’s been some progress but we’ll see what happens.”

Waisake Naholo is the obvious replacement for Milner-Skudder while Joe Moody — who threw a classy try assist against France — is on standby for his Canterbury teammate Crockett.

South Africa’s concerns are locks Lood de Jager and Victor Matfield and world class hooker Bismark du Plessis.

“Lood injured a tendon in his foot,” Springboks doctor Craig Roberts said. We just have to wait and see how it settles over the next few days before making a decision”.

“Bismarck has a nasty laceration on his hand, which was caused by Francois Louw accidentally standing on it. It’s been stitched up and is still swollen, but I’m confident Bismarck will be ready for the All Blacks.”

TEAMS Squad :

New Zealand: Ben Smith, Nehe Milner-Skudder, Conrad Smith, Ma’a Nonu, Julian Savea, Daniel Carter, Aaron Smith; Joe Moody, Dane Coles, Owen Franks, Brodie Retallick, Sam Whitelock, Jerome Kaino, Richie McCaw (captain), Kieran Read
